The Siena softball team, and MAAC regular season champions, will play in their first tournament game since 2003 when they take on the fourth seeded Niagara Purple Eagles today at 2 p.m. at Gartland Athletic Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
The Saints enter this tournament as the No. 1 seed for the first time in the program's history and have won a season-long five straight games entering play today.
Siena has five players hitting over .300, led by first baseman Paige Lloyd who hits a team-best .376 and has smashed eight home runs.
Jessika - Jo Sandrini is the team's leading pitcher with a 3.73 ERA and batting .368, third best on the squad.
Siena has won the previous six meetings with the Purple Eagles, all under the direction of head coach Bill Lajeunesse who has never lost to Niagara. The Saints swept Niagara this season (5-2; 10- 7). Shannon Jones had five RBI in those games.
With a win, Siena will advance to the winners bracket taking on the winner of No. 2 Fairfield and No. 3 Marist, Friday at 11 a.m. With a loss, Siena will go to the losers bracket and take on the loser of the Stags and Red Foxes, Friday at 1 p.m. in the tournament's first elimination game.
