After their historic win to clinch a share of the MAAC regular season crown, the Siena softball program wins two of the final three awards this year. Jessika - Jo Sandrini took home her first weekly award of the season, while Alyssa Lancaster earned her second Rookie of the Week.
Sandrini enjoyed a historic week, both team wise and individual wise. The junior became the program’s all-time win leader recoding four wins, to bring her career total to 36, while recording a 0.88 ERA. Sandrini helped her team to its first-ever share of a MAAC regular season championship, striking out seven in five and a third to get the win in the opener. In the closer, she came in relief and worked a scoreless two and a third.
At one point this week, she had a 10.2 innings scoreless streak, including retiring all seven hitters she faced against Canisius to clinch the first playoff spot since 2003. At the plate, Sandrini batted .429 while scoring five runs and recording a .600 on-base-percentage.
Lancaster batted .467 (7-for-15) while driving in four and scoring three times in Siena’s historic week. In the first game against Marist, Lancaster tallied three hits and scored twice allowing Siena to have a chance at the regular season title. She went a perfect 2-for-2 in the opener against Canisius. In the circle, she recorded a 2.74 ERA in her 7.2 innings pitched.
For the first time in their history, the Saints have earned the No. 1 seed in the MAAC tournament and will take on No. 4 Niagara Thursday at 2 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. This is the first tournament appearance for Siena since 2003 and they will try to win just their second MAAC playoff contest.
