The Siena softball team begins the meat of the season -- facing UAlbany in a nonconference game Thursday and then heading into its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader against Marist in Poughkeepsie on Saturday.
The Saints are 9-12 after splitting with Sacred Heart on Sunday -- Siena winning the first game 3-2 in eight innings and losing 3-2 in the nightcap.
One of the top performers for the Saints has been sophomore Shannon Jones of Troy (Troy High). The shortstop is hitting .403 (27-for-67) with six doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI and a team-leading 10 runs scored. She was 4-for-7 against Sacred Heart, including a 3-for-3 effort in the second game.
Senior right fielder Courtney Brinkman of Troy (Troy High) is hitting .283 (13-for-46) with two doubles, a home run, six RBI and five runs scored. She has also stolen three bases in five attempts. And, she's pitched in five games in relief.
Junior Lindsey McKeever of Mechanicville (Mechanicville High) is starting in center field. She's hitting .196 (10-for-51) with two doubles, an RBI and five runs scored. Sophomore left fielder Mandy Ferro of Clifton Park (Shenendehowa) is hitting .175 (11-for-63) with two doubles, four RBI and seven runs scored. She's also pitched in four games in relief.
Freshman Taylor Guerin of Latham (Shaker) is a reserve on the squad.
Freshman Jessica-Jo Sandrini of Adna, Wash., is the team's standout. She's hitting .471 and has a 6-3 pitching record.
