LOUDONVILLE, NY - Junior first baseman Madysen Cossack has been named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, while also being named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team. The team was selected to finish sixth in the Preseason Coaches Poll.
Last season, Cossack was named the Player of the Year following her standout sophomore season. She became just the second Player of the Year in Siena Softball History. She is also the second player in Siena history to be named Preseason Player of the Year, following Shannon Jones earning the honor in 2013.
Cossack started every game last season for the Saints and led the team in nearly every statistical category including average (.379), runs (27), hits (53), doubles (15), home runs (10), RBI (45), and total bases (98). She tied the single-season record with her 15 doubles and had the second-most RBI in a single season in program history. Her 2017 numbers rank sixth in home runs, ninth in hits, and fifth in total bases in the Siena Softball record book for a single season.
Fairfield was selected as the Preseason favorite receiving six of 11 first-place votes. Monmouth earned three first-place votes and was picked second. Marist (95) and Iona (89) both received one first-place vote and rounded out the top-four. Manhattan (84) was selected just above the Saints who were picked sixth with 69 points. Canisius (51), Quinnipiac (49), Niagara (46), Rider (17) and Saint Peter’s (17) rounded out the poll.
The Saints are set to begin their 2018 slate at the FIU Classic on Friday, February 23 against Central Connecticut at 9 a.m. Siena will begin MAAC play when they host Niagara for their home opener on Saturday, March 31 at 12 p.m.
