Siena softball dropped the team's final two non-league contests of the 2012 regular season Tuesday, losing both games of a doubleheader against UAlbany. The Saints fell 8-0 and 6-2, and have now lost seven in a row.
Game one was a lopsided affair. Siena (18-28) scratched out only one hit in five innings, while the UAlbany offense scored all eight runs in a three-inning stretch to end the game early via the eight-run rule.
The lone bright spot of the game came from pitcher Jessika - Jo Sandrini. The sophomore took the loss, but struck out seven in five innings to break Siena's single-season strikeout record. Sandrini now has 123 strikeouts on the year, two better than the record set by Tara Campbell '06 in her sophomore campaign in 2004.
The second game was much more evenly-matched. The Great Danes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but a two-out single by Sandrini in the first inning scored Lauren Milligan from third and cut the deficit in half.
UAlbany put up two more runs in the fourth and scored once in the sixth, but the Saints put a scare into their crosstown rivals when down to their last six outs. Nastasha Powlowsky opened the bottom of the sixth with a single, and Chelsea Stout followed her with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs.
After Alyssa Sceppaguercio walked with one out, Powlowsky scored from third on a wild pitch, and suddenly, the Saints were down 5-2 with the tying run at the plate. However, UAlbany starter Brittany Schwieger recorded back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning, the Great Danes scored in the seventh, and Siena went down in order to end the doubleheader.
Siena will return to action Saturday with a huge MAAC doubleheader at home against Marist. It doubles as Senior Day for the Saints, and Saturday's results could play a substantial role in the MAAC Tournament picture. The ceremony will begin at approximately 12:40 p.m., and game time is set for 1 p.m.
