Tara Campbell tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener, and the Saints scored the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap as the Siena softball team (9-20/5-5 MAAC) swept Iona (10-23/3-9) 1-0 and 3-2 at Siena Field Tuesday. The Saints improved their MAAC record to .500 with the win as eight games remain on their conference slate.
Siena scored the lone run in the opener in the bottom of the third inning, as Christ Wittman came around to score on a two-out bunt single by Carrie Getz. Wittman had reached on a leadoff single, was sacrificed to second and then stole third.
The run was more than enough insurance for Siena's freshman ace Tara Campbell, who improved to 4-7 with the shutout. Campbell struckout eight Gaels and walked three in her seven innings of work.
Siena struck for a pair of runs in their first at bat in the second game as Adrian St. Cin, the Saints starting pitcher, blasted her third home run of the season to left centerfield. Veronica Arredondo, who doubled with one out scored on the homer. Iona rallied to pull within a single run on an RBI single to centerfield by Aviva Jorstad with two outs. The Gaels would even things up with a run in the sixth, as Jorstad doubled home Amanda Pucci.
Campbell returned to the circle to relieve St. Cin in the fifth inning, and would ultimately earn her second win of the day, as the Saints rallied for the win in the seventh. Pinch hitter Becky Brockman began the threat with a single to centerfield. Pinch runner Jamie Walker advanced to second on a passed ball and Getz followed with an infield single. The duo advanced a base on Arredondo's sacrifice bunt and Walker scored the winner on the aforementioned passed ball.
The Saints return to conference action tomorrow afternoon at Manhattan.
