Twin sisters Courtney and Brandey Weed combined for five hits in the first three innings of the second half a doubleheader sweep of Siena (7-20/3-5 MAAC) in Loudonville Sunday afternoon. Rider scored three unearned runs en route to a 6-0 win in the opener before earning an 8-0 triumph in the nightcap.
Siena's Tara Campbell went the distance in the opener allowing just three earned runs, and returned to toss three shutout innings in the nightcap after the Saints fell behind 8-0 after two innings.
Kiera Fox broke a scoreless tie her first of two home runs on the afternoon in the fifth inning of game one. After Siena let a golden opportunity to tie the game slip by in the bottom half of the frame, when Veronica Arredondo got caught in a bazaar run down, the Broncs salted the game away with a three-spot in the sixth.
Adrian St. Cin singled sharply to centerfield with two out and runners on first and second in the fifth for the Saints, but Arredondo was held at third. The ball got away from Rider's centerfielder and Sarah Rose, the trailing runner, headed for third. Arredondo was caught in the rundown after the ball was relayed to the infield and the Saints had two players headed for the same base.
The Saints had little opportunity to avenge the loss in game two, as Rider jumped all over St. Cin for six runs in their initial at bat. Courtney Weed went 4-4 in the backend of the sweep, accounting for 1/3 of Rider's hit total.
Siena returns to action in a rescheduled doubleheader with Iona at 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
