Siena softball dropped both halves of a doubleheader against Fordham Wednesday at Siena Field. The Saints were very competitive in both games, but fell victim to costly home runs late in each contest.
Game one saw the Saints (7-20) fall behind 3-0 early after a first-inning three-run homer. Siena did manage to peck away, though, scoring twice in the fourth on an RBI single by reigning MAAC Player of the Week Nastasha Powlowsky and a run-scoring double by Kayla Kaminsky.
Fordham managed just two hits off starter Amanda Filippazzo after the first inning, but both played a part in a three-run fifth inning. After a two-out single and a walk, the senior righty yielded another three-run shot. The Saints outhit the Rams 8-5, and got multiple hits from Mandy Ferro, Shannon Jones, and Jen Duell, but were unable to mount a final charge.
Game two saw Siena fall victim to two unearned runs in the second inning and another in the sixth. Siena's bats were largely held in check by Fordham's Jen Mineau, one of the top pitchers in the East, but the Green and Gold came alive in their half of the sixth.
Pitcher Jessika - Jo Sandrini started the rally by drawing a one-out walk. Shannon Jones then singled to center, bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Megan Volz. The freshman then proceeded to belt her second home run of the season, a three-run blast over the left field wall that tied the game at 3 heading into the seventh.
Unfortunately, the Rams would counter with yet another timely four-bagger. Sandrini, who had allowed just four hits to that point, surrendered a two-out, three-run shot, one that gave the Rams their second victory of the day.
The Saints return to action Thursday with a doubleheader at Colgate.
