Coming off a game where Siena could manage one hit against UAlbany, the Saints’ bats were silenced again as they combined to go 6-for-41 (.146) in a sweep against three-time defending MAAC champions the Iona Gaels (5-0, 11-0). It is the fourth straight season that the Saints have been swept by the Gaels.
Both games were decided in the first inning, as the Gaels would combine for eight runs in the first frame. In the opener, Iona (6-25, 3-1 MAAC) tallied just two runs with the first five runners reaching base. Beth Kann opened up the scoring for the Gaels with an RBI single and Brianna Schauer would score on a wild pitch.
After that, Jessika - Jo Sandrini would settle down allowing just two hits and eight strikeouts in the next four innings.
Iona would add on three more runs in the fifth.
Siena (6-18, 0-2 MAAC) recorded their first hit against Beth Kann when Abby Carpenter singled in the fifth inning. Shannon Jones and Mandy Ferro were the other Siena players to record hits in the game.
In the nightcap, Siena’s bats could still not figure out Iona’s pitching. This time, Carly Argyle was the pitching force. The Saints would tally just three hits in the five innings, with Jones going 2-for-2.
On the other side, Iona scored in four of the five innings including six times in the first against starter Alyssa Lancaster.
Siena, who dropped their conference opener for the 13th straight year, continues their home stand tomorrow as they welcome Big East member Seton Hall for a double header at 12 p.m.
