The softball team traveled to face crosstown rivals UAlbany for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. UAlbany got the better part of the Saints, earning the sweep. Siena dropped the first game 6-1 and the second game 10-7.
UAlbany Senior Brittany MacFawn took the mound for UAlbany in the first game, pitching a complete game allowing one run on three hits with 11 strikeouts and zero walks. The Saints were unable to string together the hits, scattering three hits over the seven innings. Jessika-Jo Sandrini, Chelsey Drew and Paige Lloyd recorded the three hits for Siena. Drew hit a homerun for the Saints only run in the fifth.
Antonia Edwards started in the circle for Siena. Facing 17 batters, Edwards pitched 3.0 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and struck out five Great Danes. Alyssa Lancaster relieved Edwards in the fourth inning (2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB) and Danielle Cacciola finished the final two innings (2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K).
In the second game, the Saints offense came to life, earning seven runs on nine hits. Three Saints had a multi-hit game. Siena’s top two hitters, Stephanie Viggiano and Abby Carpenter (.365) each had two hits and Chelsey Drew also recorded two hits.
Viggiano currently leads the team with a .370 batting average after she doubled to centerfield in the fourth, scoring Mikayla Powlowsky and doubled again in the seventh.
hit the ball well today after smacking two doubles, a lead off double in the second and a double in the fourth. Drew improves her batting average to .227.
The MAAC Pitcher of the Week, Jessika – Jo Sandrini, started in the circle for game two, giving up all 10 runs (8 earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Siena doesn’t have much time to dwell on this series as they head to Worcester, Mass. to play two more against Holy Cross. The expected start time is 3 p.m.
