Box Score

Senior 3B Aimee Barsalona belted three home runs--one in the first game and two in the second--and RHP Kathryn Bucco and RHP Michelle Bair each pitched complete-game five-hitters, as Saint Peter's swept Siena, 3-2 and 5-3, Saturday afternoon.

The wins lifted Saint Peter's to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Siena is 3-8 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC. The doubleheader was the first game action for Saint Peter's since the unexpected death of its head coach, Ron DeRogatis, on March 24.

Barsalona, who now has five home runs on the season, tied the first game with a two-run homer in the fourth inning and then hit two home runs to center field in the second game. She powered a three-run shot in the first inning and a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie.

Bucco (5-4) yielded a two-run homer to the third batter of the first game, Siena 3B Sarah Rose (Loudon, NH), but allowed no runs and only four hits the rest of the way. The Saint Peter's senior finished with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks. RHP Tisha Salamino (Las Vegas, NV) took the loss for Siena.

Rose's two-run first-inning homer stood as the only runs of the first game, until Barsalona's homer that traveled at least 50 feet beyond the left field fence to tie the score in the fourth.

Saint Peter's got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth, when 1B Candace Winder (Waldwick/Waldwick HS) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and came around to score when 2B Jessica Perez (Clifton/St. Mary's HS of Rutherford) hit a pop that was dropped in center field for an error, as the outfield came in and the infielders went back.

Siena again took to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, as one run scored on an infield out and another scored on a two-out single by RF Christa Fasano (Hawthorne, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy).

Much as Kathryn Bucco shut down Siena after the first inning of the opener, Bair (4-1) did the same in the second game--allowing just two hits and an unearned run the rest of the way.

While Siena took the quick two-run lead, Saint Peter's got back on top quickly in the nightcap, as LF Jen Cordero (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic HS) and C Marsha Kelley (Mickleton/Kingsway Regional HS) each hit one-out singles in the first inning, before Barsalona unloaded the second of her three home runs.

Siena tied the game at three in the top of the sixth with back-to-back hits two-out hits, including a double by Fasano, followed by an infield error that plated the tying run. But in the bottom of the inning, Cordero led off with a walk, Kelley was out on a hard line drive and Barsalona hit the winning homer.

Bair finished with 3 strikeouts and two walks, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned). Freshman RHP Tara Campbell (Spring Valley, CA) got the loss for Siena, yielding just four hits, while striking out four and walking two.
