The Siena softball team swept a pair of softball games from host Bucknell on Sunday, March 23. The Saints took the opener, 6-2, before winning in 11 innings in the nightcap, 8-3.
The Bison struck first in the opener, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Angela Stackhouse hit a two-out single to left field, and stole second to get into scoring position. Freshman Lauren Wible then stepped in and delivered a single down the leftfield line, scoring Stackhouse.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fourth when the Saints tied it up. Sarah Rose led off the inning with a double. Adrian St. Cin's single advanced Rose to third, and two outs later, Colleen Price hit an RBI single down the left field line.
Siena exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to jump out to a 6-1 lead. The first six batters of the inning reached base, including three by way of hits.
The Orange and Blue got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame when sophomore Jill Pompeii reached on a single and eventually crossed the plate on Wible's fielders choice. The damage was done, however, and Bucknell dropped the 6-2 decision.
Things were looking bleak again in the nightcap, with Bucknell trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Kris Devore led off the inning with a single and senior Meredith Gill drew a walk to put runners on first and second. After sophomore Kelli Hakins sacrificed both into scoring position, Pompeii delivered a two-RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
The teams headed to extra innings, and neither could get on the board in the eighth, ninth or tenth. Siena took advantage of two hits and two Bucknell errors in the top of the 11th frame to score five runs. The Bison could not overcome the big inning, and the Saints held on for the 8-2 extra inning win.
