The softball team overcame a two-hour snow delay Friday afternoon and defeated Akron 4-3 in the RMU Classic. Jessika-Jo Sandrini pitched through the snow delay for the complete game win.
The game started at 10:30 in the morning, only to be delayed by snow with the game resuming around 3:00 p.m., a four hour delay.
Sandrini gave up only three hits with three runs and gave up six walks as she improves her overall record to 6-4 on the season. Sandrini also had an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the fifth.
Abby Carpenter had a big day for the Saints, driving in two runs on two hits and scored another two runs. Carpenter drove home Jesskia-Jo Sandrini on a no out double in the bottom of the second before the snow delay. The delay didn’t cool down Carpenter as she homered to left field in her first at-bat after the weather delay to give the Saints a 3-2 lead after four innings.
The Saints tallied the four runs on eight hits and a walk offensively. Melanie Kalesse recorded a multi-hit game, singling in the first and again in the fifth innings. Stephanie Viggiano, Paige Lloyd and Megan Volz each had one hit with Volz recording an RBI double in the second inning.
Sandrini kept the Akron hitters off-balance and Wildey, Allmon and Roudabush each had a hit for the Zips.
The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled due to the weather delay and they still needed to complete other games in the RMU Classic between Robert Morris and Miami (OH). The Saints are back at it tomorrow morning when they face the host team Robert Morris at 11 a.m. Saints fans can follow the game against Robert Morris via Live Stats or Watch Free online. Tomorrow’s second game will start at 1 p.m. against Miami (Oh).
