Siena softball earned its first win of the 2012 season Saturday, riding a six-run sixth inning to an 8-2 victory over Army at the George Washington Tournament. The Siena offense banged out 10 hits in the win, half of which came in the pivotal frame.

The Saints (1-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, when senior catcher Nastasha Powlowsky belted her first home run of the season. Army (4-4) would tie it with runs in the third and sixth, but their offense was largely held in check by Amanda Filippazzo, who went the distance and allowed just four hits in seven innings.

The flood gates opened in the sixth, though, when an error by Army's shortstop left the door open for an avalanche by the Siena offense. After freshman Abby Carpenter scored on the blunder, junior Mandy Ferro recorded her third hit of the day, an RBI single that scored Powlowsky. Alyssa Sceppaguercio followed that up with a base knock to left field that scored McKeever, and Shannon Jones capped off the barrage with her second home run of the season, a three-run shot that finished the day's scoring.

Siena finishes play at the George Washington Tournament Sunday, with a 9 a.m. tilt against the host Colonials.
