Siena Softball continued play at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational on Saturday, taking on Eastern Michigan and UAB. The Saints dropped two one-run decisions, 10-9 to the Eagles and 6-5 to the Blazers.
Game One: Eastern Michigan 10, Siena 9
Siena's offense exploded for nine runs on 12 hits in the first game of the day against the Eagles (2-1), but fell 10-9 after a three-run seventh for Eastern Michigan. Jazmin Ortiz went 3-for-4 with a home run for the Saints (1-3), while Loryn DeFalco notched three RBI on two hits. Chelsey Drew also blasted her third home run in three games for Siena.
The Saints grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on the solo shot by Ortiz, her second of the season and of her career, but the Eagles tied it up 1-1 in the bottom part of the frame with a double and a single.
Eastern Michigan took a 5-1 lead in the second inning on four hits, including an RBI double by Danielle Rico. Siena would cut the lead down to 5-2 in the third when DeFalco hit an RBI single to score Paige Hess who had singled and stolen third base in the frame.
The Saints tied the game 5-5 in the top of the fourth, plating three runs on four hits. Sarah Ho singled to start the big inning, scoring on Lauren Sabihon's triple. Madysen Cossack and Brooke Taylor also added one RBI each in the inning, but the Eagles took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs to make it a 7-5 game.
However, Siena stormed back in the sixth, taking a 9-7 lead. The Saints totaled four runs on four hits in the frame. Drew blasted her third home run in 2017, and 13th of her career, after doubles by Taylor and DeFalco earlier in the inning.
Then, Eastern Michigan used two hits, three walks, and an error to plate three in the seventh for the walk-off win. Michelle Kreigshauser recorded the game-winning RBI walk with the bases loaded to end the game, giving the Eagles the 10-9 win.
Game Two: UAB 6, Siena 5
The Saints suffered another tough loss 6-5 in the second game of the day against the Blazers (1-5). Loryn DeFalco hit her third career home run for Siena, while Jessika Jaime added two RBI. Freshman Brooke Hughes pitched a complete game for the Saints in her first career start on the mound, giving up just three earned runs.
Siena was the first team on the board, plating two runs in the bottom of the third inning, including two on Jaime's single. The Saints tacked another run on in the fourth to make it 3-0, courtesy of an RBI flyout by Brooke Taylor that brought Jess Vollmer home to score.
The Blazers scored their first run in the top of the fifth, to cut the lead down to 3-1. UAB had one hit and the Saints had one error in the frame. Siena responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase the lead to 5-1. DeFalco deposited a two out, two run home run over the fence after Jaime walked.
In the bottom of the sixth, the game entered a rain delay that would last nearly one hour. The Saints were held scoreless in the frame, and then the Blazers scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. UAB capitalized on 2 Siena errors, along with 2 hits and a walk, to plate the go-ahead runs. Paige Hess drew a two out walk for the Saints, but they were unable to score the tying run, falling to the Blazers 6-5.
Siena will conclude the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational with one game on Sunday. First pitch against Central Michigan is scheduled for 9 a.m.
