LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. ¨C Siena men's soccer junior Jannis Opalka and women's soccer senior Ashleigh Barone have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Soccer Teams. Opalka was a First Team District I selection, while Barone was named to the Second Team.
The 2011 Capital One Academic All-District Team are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and recognize the nation's top student athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Opalka was one of four backs selected to the Division I District I First Team. District I covers all six New England states and New York.
On the field, Opalka anchored the center back which allowed just 0.94 goals per game. A junior from Stade, Germany, Opalka started all 17 games he played and dished out two assists.
Academically, Opalka has maintained a stellar 3.94 cumulative GPA as a Marketing and Management major. Last week he was named to his second straight MAAC All-Academic Team and over the summer he was the MAAC's male nominee for the 2010-11 NCAA Student Athlete Sportsmanship Award.
Barone was one of three forwards selected to the Division I District I Second Team. A native of nearby Clifton Park, N.Y., she recently completed one of the finest careers in MAAC Women's Soccer history.
Athletically, Barone currently ranks fifth all-time in MAAC history with 106 career points and is the Saints' all-time leader in goals (44) and game-winning goals (15) and tied for first in assists (18).
In the classroom Barone compiled a 3.33 GPA and is on course to graduate in May with her degree in Psychology. She was also named to her third straight MAAC All-Academic Team last week.
