Worcester, MASS - Erica Backstrom (Worcester, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Holy Cross women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Siena Tuesday, Oct. 8 on Fitton Field. Holy Cross improved to 3-5-2 on the year while the Saints dropped to 0-6-2.
After a scoreless first half, the Crusaders took advantage of their second shot of the second half and fifth overall. Backstrom converted an indirect kick from senior back Caitlyn Lynch (North Easton, Mass.) at midfield, into the game's first goal. The next tally came almost 30 minutes later when Siena midfielder Nicole Orlandella received a pass from Erin DeMatteo to knot the count at one. The tie was short lived as Backstrom scored in a scramble in front of the Saints' goal at the 81:09 mark.
The Crusaders' solid defensive effort resulted in only one save by Christine Arsenault (North Easton, Mass) in the win. Siena was limited to four shots on goal. Her Siena counterpart, Noel Cox, made six saves.
