Gabriella D'Aprile broke a scoreless tie in the 78th minute and Iona went on to defeat Siena women's soccer 1-0 Friday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. The loss snaps Siena's eight game win streak.
Iona (4-8-1, 1-1) outshot Siena (8-2, 2-1) 20-14 in the game. Siena's leading scorer Caitlin Cahalan did not start for the first time this season. She came off the bench and registered one shot in 44 minutes. Tabitha Tice led the team with three shots.
In the 78th minute, D'Aprile took a pass from Julia Zorn and chipped the ball into the left corner of the net. Iona goalkeeper Suzanne Baldissard made eight saves to record the shutout and earn her first win of the season. Laura Ettinger made seven saves for the Saints.
Siena returns to action this Sunday when it travels to Fairfield. The Stags defeated the Saints in a penalty shootout in the MAAC Tournament semifinals last year. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
