LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - St. John's held off a furious Siena rally to score a 3-2 victory over the Saints on a glorious Sunday afternoon at Siena College. With the win, St. John's improves to 1-3 while Siena falls to 0-2 on the 2003 season.
The Red Storm notched the first three goals of the game, striking first in the 31st minute when Watervliet native Erin Henderson finished a cross from Kaitlin Schmidt. St. John's struck again early in the second half on an unassisted goal by Natasha Lee. The Red Storm put the game seemingly out of reach in the 79th minute when Mallory DiMaio headed in a cross from Schmidt.
However, the Saints refused to quit, mounting a late rally. With just under nine minutes left, freshman Kristen Turner (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) finished an unsettled ball in front of the goal to cut the deficit to two. Fellow frosh Lauren Stys (Hooksett, N.Y./Manchester Central) and senior captain Erin Beam (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink) picked up assists on the play. The Green and Gold struck for the final time on an unassisted goal by Gianna Ferranti (Melville, N.Y./Walt Whitman) with under a minute left. Despite pulling their goalkeeper, Siena was unable to mount a serious scoring threat in the final 30 seconds.
Gabriela Franco made five saves for the victors while Noel Cox (Uniondale, N.Y./Uniondale) also stopped five shots for the Saints. Siena outshot St. John's 13-12 while the Red Storm had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Saints travel south to take on Temple on Wednesday. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
