CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. - The Siena women's soccer team kicked off their season with a hard-fought 1-1 tie against Army in a game played at Shenendehowa High School.
Army (0-0-1) controlled play throughout most of the game, outshooting Siena 36-9 and owning a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks. Siena (0-0-1), however, took advantage of opportunities presented them. Jill Lanzl (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) capitalized on an Army turnover to give Siena an early lead with a goal in the 24th minute.
The Black Knights answered less than 10 minutes later when Alison Mulnix scored off assists from Kelly Schachtler and Lauren Rowe. Both teams created numerous scoring opportunities in the second half and through both overtimes but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Noel Cox (Uniondale, N.Y./Uniondale) kept the Saints in the game with a career-high 18 saves.
Siena travels west to play in the Idaho State tournament in Pocatello, Idaho. The Saints play Boise State on Friday before facing the host school on Saturday.
