Jess McCavanaugh scored the game's first goal and assisted on the second as Central Connecticut built a 2-0 lead and held off a late Siena rally to win 2-1 in New Britain Sunday afternoon. Kristen Turner took six of the Saints 11 shots and scored the team's lone goal in defeat.
McCavanagh finished a long field pass from Kelly Shimmin as Siena keeper Noel Cox was forced out of the net to play the ball. McCavangh served the ball over Cox and put it into the back of the net just 11:53 into the game.
The Blue Devils took the 1-0 lead to the intermission despite being out-shot 5-4.
The game-winning goal came at the 55:50 mark as Jennifer Frisch took a long cross from McCavanagh and beat Cox with a well-placed offering.
The Saints only goal came with 11:40 to play when Sarah Hopkins put a corner kick into the box where it was deflected off of Amy Loughridge before Kristen Turner placed it in the back left corner of the net.
In the game both teams took 11 shots. Ferra recorded five saves on the afternoon while Cox collected three.
CCSU improves to 1-1 on the season, Siena falls to 0-1. The Saints return to action Friday night at 7 p.m. against UAlbany at Clifton Commons.
