Sophomore midfielder Katie Zambrano netted the Saints' first goal of the year but it wasn't enough as women's soccer dropped its season opener 3-1 Friday night at Rhode Island. The Rams out-shot the Saints 13-3 and held a 4-1 edge in corners.
Zambrano headed in a right-to-left cross from classmate Anna Grant in the 49th minute to level the Saints (0-1) with Rhode Island (2-0) at 1-1. The Rams had taken a 1-0 lead into halftime following a Jennifer Barrientos goal in the 32nd minute.
The Rams went ahead for good just five minutes later when Ashley Evangelista finished a Marisa Ammaturo pass. Rhode Island's Jessie Valenti added an insurance tally in the 76th minute.
Taylor Booth made three saves for the Saints, while the Rams' Chelsea Broghamer was called upon to make one stop.
The Saints face a stiff test Sunday when they return to the pitch for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights are currently ranked 23rd nationally in the latest NSCAA Coaches' Poll.
