LOUDONVILLE, N.Y.- Siena lacrosse seniors Matt Bellucci and Lauren Smith have been named the Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the month for February. Both student-athletes are captains of their respective squads and receive this honor for their work on and off the field.

Bellucci, a finance major from West Islip, NY, has appeared in six games while making two starts. In 2016 he has tallied one goal. In his career, the midfielder has 37 appearances in a Siena uniform, recording one goal and four assists. In the classroom, he currently sports a 3.43 cumulative grade point average after achieving a 3.17 GPA for the fall semester. He was a MAAC All-Academic and Academic Honor Roll selection in 2015.

Smith achieves this honor after the senior was recently named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week. This award comes at a time of many accolades for the Menands, NY native. In the Saints’ recent game against Vermont, she recorded her 100th career point and 100th career groundball. She became just the 11th player in the program’s 20 seasons to eclipse 100 career points, and joined Lindsey Rosecrans ’09 as the only players in program history with 100 points, 100 groundballs and 100 draw controls. As a finance major, Smith achieved a 3.92 grade point average for the fall semester, increasing her cumulative GPA to 3.63. She was a Second Team All-MAAC and MAAC All-Rookie Team selection in 2013 and a MAAC All-Academic Team selection in 2014.

The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
