Men Picked Fourth, Women Sixth in Lacrosse Preseason Poll

Siena Men’s Lacrosse has been picked to finish fourth and the women the women tied for sixth according to their respective MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Polls. The polls were revealed during the MAAC Lacrosse Preseason Awards Show which aired Tuesday night on MAAC.TV.

The men received 24 points to find themselves in fourth place. Defending MAAC champion Quinnipiac was selected as the unanimous preseason favorite. Monmouth (38) and Marist (34) topped off the Top-three. Canisius (23), Detroit Mercy (17) and Manhattan (11) rounded out the poll.

Senior defensemen Joe Arcarese was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team. Arcarese ranked fifth best in the conference with his 1.23 caused turnovers per game. The Saints return four of their top five scorers, including leading scorer Chris Robertson. The men posted a 3-10 overall record last season and finished 2-4 in the MAAC.

On the women’s side, Siena tied with Iona for sixth place with 32 points. Canisius was picked as the unanimous favorite on the women’s side after winning both the regular season and MAAC Championship. Monmouth (70) was picked second, while Fairfield (57) and Marist (57) tied for third. Niagara was picked just before the Saints and Gaels with 48 votes. Manhattan (14) and Quinnipiac (14) tied for eighth.

Emily Conway was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team for defense. She played and started in all 17 games for the Saints. Conway picked up 14 groundballs, had seven caused turnovers and 17 draw controls. The women recorded a 7-10 overall record in 2016 and finished in the MAAC with a 2-6 league record. The Saints return 17 including six starters and four of the programs top-seven scorers which set a program record averaging 12.1 goals per game and tied the program’s single-season record of 206 goals scored. Senior Michelle Schwartz returns as the Saints leading scorer as she tallied 23 goals.

The men open their 2017 season on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Carrier Dome against perennial national power Syracuse, which was picked seventh in the Inside Lacrosse 2017 Face-Off Yearbook poll. The women open their season on Sunday, Feb. 19 in Rock Hill, South Carolina where they will face 2016 Big South Conference Tournament Championships Winthrop.
