Feb. 6, 2013
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Women's Lacrosse was picked fifth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll Wednesday as voted upon by the conference's seven head coaches. Senior captains Katie Maguire and Amanda Peguillan were both named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.
Two-time defending MAAC Champion Canisius was the preseason favorite receiving 44 total votes while regular season champion Fairfield was a close second with 42 votes. Marist (33) was picked third followed by Iona (29), Siena (26), Manhattan (13) and Niagara (9) in the seven-team league.
Siena posted a 6-11 overall record last season and finished tied for third in the MAAC with a 3-3 conference mark. The Saints qualified for the MAAC Tournament for a third straight year by virtue of finishing as one of the top-four teams in the league.
Maguire was a First Team All-MAAC selection last year after leading the Saints in both draw controls (33) and free-position goals (14), the latter of which ranked her second in the MAAC. Maguire started and played in all 17 games at midfield last season finishing with 30 points and carries a 14-game point scoring streak into this year.
Peguillan has been an anchor of the Siena defense where she has been a three-year starter. She started and played in all 17 games last year and finished with 16 groundballs and caused nine turnovers.
Siena graduated its top two scorers, starting goalie and a total of six starters from last year's team. But the Saints do return six experienced starters and a strong young nucleus, eager to lead the program to an unprecedented fourth straight MAAC Tournament Appearance this spring.
The Saints begin their quest for the program's first MAAC Championship when they open their 2013 season Feb. 19 at Bryant at 3 p.m.
