Women's Lacrosse Drops MAAC Opener to Niagara

Megan McNerney had a game-high three goals and added one assist to lead Niagara University to a 12-6 victory over Siena College this afternoon at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. With the loss the Saints fall to 2-7 on the season and 0-1 in the MAAC while the Purple Eagles improve to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in league play.
Niagara jumped out to an early lead as McNerney scored the first two of her goals back-to-back to put the Purple Eagles up 2-0. Niagara then found the back of the net two more times before Caitlin Doherty put one in for the Saints at the 14:10 mark. Niagara added four more goals in the next seven minutes, including two tallies from Rachel Jones and Joan Paul netted one for the Saints at with 5:56 left in the first for an 8-2 halftime score.
Siena recorded the first goal of the second half as Stephanie Petruccelli fed Karla Gudgel who put the ball away to cut the Niagara lead to five, but the Purple Eagles answered quickly, scoring a goal of their own at the 10:28 mark for an 8-3 advantage. Some six minutes went by before Siena scored a quick two goals, courtesy of Petruccelli and Gudgel. Again Niagara answered back and put away two goals of their own to go ahead by six with an 11-5 score. Each team added one more goal in the final minute of play and the Purple Eagles walked away with the 12-6 MAAC victory.
Gudgel led the Saints with two goals while Petruccelli had one goal and one assist.
In addition to McNerney, Jones and Sandra Gallegos had multiple-goal performances, scoring two goals apiece. Gallegos also added a game-high three assists.
Siena keeper Mary-Elizabeth Dupelle and Niagara goalie Michelle Nucci made 16 each for their respective teams.
The Saints will again travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. tomorrow, Monday, April 14 for another conference match-up. Siena will face Canisius with a scheduled start of 12:00 noon.
