LOUDONVILLE, NY - In a tightly contested MAAC battle, Siena Women’s Lacrosse fell 11-9 to Iona on Saturday afternoon at Siena Turf Field.
Jenna Tolzmann tallied four goals and one assist for Iona (4-9, 1-3 MAAC). Pamela Giordano recorded a hat-trick along with one assist for the Gaels.
Freshman Alexis Deaken led all scorers with four goals and one assist for five points for Siena (1-10, 0-3 MAAC). Michelle Schwartz and Brianna Sirianni recorded two goals a piece. Sammy Horton tallied 13 saves in the cage. Deaken picked up a game-high eight ground balls.
Senior midfielder Sirianni got the scoring started right away as she put one on goal at 29:41 from Deaken. The Gaels then recorded four unanswered goals, three of which came at the hands of Tolzmann. Alexis Deaken recorded her first goal of the game with just over 21 minutes in the half and the Saints trailed Iona 4-2.
Tolzmann and Pugh added a goal a piece for the Gaels for a 6-2 lead with 10 minutes left in the half. Deaken recorded her second goal of the game off a free position attempt and was followed up by Julia Sardella to end the half with the Saints trailing 6-4.
After a tightly contested battle to start the second half with the Saints putting three on goal they trailed Iona just 8-7 with under 16 minutes to go in the game. Iona fought back and made the next two plays for a 10-7 lead over the Saints.
Schwartz then tallied the next two goals for the Saints to trail 10-9 with just under four minutes to play. Iona added one more to take the victory 11-9 in Loudonville, New York.
Siena was outshot (33-31), but won 12 of the 22 draw controls and picked up 26 ground balls compared to the Gaels 24.
The Saints remain in the Capital District as they host Niagara on Wednesday, Apr. 12. Opening draw set for 4 p.m.
