Freshman Kristen Malecki (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) scored with 5:18 remaining to lift two-time defending MAAC Champion Le Moyne to an 8-7 win over Siena in the conference opener at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins (5-3, 1-0 MAAC) have won two consecutive games, while Siena (2-8, 0-1 MAAC) has dropped six in a row.
Sophomore Liz Hewitt (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) scored three of Le Moyne's six goals in the opening half as the Dolphins opened up a 6-3 lead.
Junior Megan Keddy (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) put Le Moyne up 7-3 with a goal at the 26:31 mark of the second half, but the Saints rallied for four of the game's final five goals.
Freshman Claire Devine (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) scored the next three goals of the game to pull the Saints to within a goal. Senior Dana Sherrer (Floral Park, N.Y./Kellenberg) tied the game at seven on a free-position goal with 6:10 remaining.
Malecki's goal, a free-position tally, broke the 7-7 tie and delivered the victory for Le Moyne.
Devine scored a game-high four times. Michelle Eide (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet), Christina Pampalone (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) and Sherrer scored the other goals for the Saints. Mary-Elizabeth Dupelle (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) made 10 saves in the setback.
Hewitt led Le Moyne with three goals, Malecki and Keddy scored twice and Amanda Keegan (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) netted the other goal. Senior Erica Henderson (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) made 11 saves for the Dolphins.
The Saints will return to action on Tuesday, April 6 for a non-league match-up against Drexel University. The game will be played at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. with a start time of 2:00 p.m.
