Siena out-shot Marist 29-21 and won nearly every statistical category except the one that mattered most. The Red Foxes scored the final three goals of the game to overcome women's lacrosse 10-8 in the conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie.
Siena (2-8, 0-1) scored the final three goals of the first half and surged into the lockerroom with a 7-6 lead. But the Saints' offensive momentum cooled off in the second half.
Shannon Pfohl put the Saints back on top 8-7 with 22:43 remaining, but it would be the team's final tally of the day. Ashley Miller scored the game-tying and then the game-winning goals as Marist (2-9, 1-0) came back to win.
Neither team scored in the final 12 minutes of the game, but Marist's Ashley Casiano kept the Saints from closing the gap. She stopped the final six shots she faced and made 10 saves for the game.
Katie Maguire paced the Saints with a hat trick while Michelle Andreo and Pfohl added two goals apiece. Five of Siena's eight goals came on free-position tallies.
The Saints return to the friendly confines of Siena Turf Field for a pair of key conference home game this week. Siena host Canisius Wednesday at 3 p.m. and Manhattan Saturday at 1 p.m.
