The Holy Cross women's lacrosse team scored eight goals in each of the first and second halves en route to a 16-5 win over Siena this afternoon in a driving rainstorm at the Hart Astroturf field. Sophomores Melissa Conley (Pennington, NJ) and Carolyn Smirti (Long Island, NY) each scored three goals to lead the way for HC.
The Crusaders jumped out on the Saints early on, scoring four straight goals to open the game. After Siena cut the deficit to just two with 8:35 left, HC ran off seven straight tallies bridging the gap between the first and second halves. Conley and Smirti combined for five of the seven goals during the run, which gave Holy Cross a commanding 11-2 lead with 24 minutes left to play in the game. The Saints again responded with two more goals to cut the deficit to seven, but that was as close as they would get. The Crusaders scored the game's next five goals to put the game out of reach. Freshman Ellie Gogan-Tilstone (Amherst, NH) scored two goals for HC during the run. Siena added a goal with 7:02 left to play to round out the scoring in the contest.
Freshman Trish Sutton (Saratoga Springs, NY) chipped in two goals to join Conley, Gogan-Tilstone and Smirti as multi-goal scorers for HC. The Crusaders outshot the Saints, 30-18, while forcing 22 turnovers. The victory improves Holy Cross' record to 4-6. Freshman Megan Orr (Wilton, CT) made seven stops to secure the win for the Crusaders
Siena had five different players each score one goal as they fell to 2-7 with the loss. Senior Mary-Elizabeth Dupelle stopped nine shots for the Saints.
