Siena women's lacrosse went to Oyster Bay, N.Y., Saturday in search of the program's second straight Oyster Bay Classic trophy. Instead, the Saints went home empty-handed, falling 17-7 to Wagner in the team's fourth consecutive loss.
Siena (0-4) started strong, as Katie Maguire and Michelle Andreo scored the game's first two goals on free position shots in the first 4:48. The offense would tack on two more goals in the game's opening ten minutes, as Deirdre McQuillan fired home a free position shot before assisting on Maguire's second goal of the game, one that gave the Saints a 4-3 lead.
However, Wagner (2-3) would take over from there. The Seahawks scored 14 of the game's last 17 goals, including seven of eight in the second half to expand their 10-6 halftime advantage. Carolyn Clark led Wagner with five goals and an assist on the day, while Sam Morin (four goals, one assist) and Lauren Petrik (three goals, two assists) added five points apiece.
McQuillan led Siena with three goals and an assist on the afternoon. Defensively, Amanda Corso paced the Saints with four of the team's nine ground balls.
The road gets no easier for Siena, as their return to the field comes on Wednesday afternoon against crosstown rival and regional power UAlbany. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Siena Turf Field.
