LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Behind hat-tricks from three separate Siena Women’s Lacrosse players, the Saints were able to take down Vermont 12-10 in their 2017 home opener. This is the first win over the Catamounts since 2010.
Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Alexis Deaken recorded her first collegiate hat-trick and notched the game-winning goal for the Saints (1-3). She also had three ground balls and four draw controls in the win. Fellow freshman, Julia Sardella also had a hat-trick in the victory while also dishing out two assists. She picked up two ground balls, had one draw control and went 1-1 in free position shots.
Vermont (0-5) had six different goal scorers, with four scoring two a piece. Emma Tizard had a game-high five draw controls, while Meredith Moore and Elena McWright both picked up a team-high three ground balls.
The Catamounts struck first jumping out to an early 1-0 lead, but less than a minute later the Saints came right back and tied it up 1-1. Vermont took a 3-2 lead with 20:32 left in the first half and then Siena would score the next four goals to take 6-3 lead. Right before the half the Catamounts were able to get one in the cage to trail 6-4.
The Saints opened up the second half with three goals as they held onto a 9-4 lead. After exchanging goals and Siena taking a 10-5 lead, Vermont would score five unanswered goals to tie the contest at 10 a piece. Deaken and Sardella then both put one on goal to complete their first collegiate hat-tricks and give the Saints the 12-10 win.
Cara McQuillian was the third and final Saint to record a hat-trick in the victory. Sammy Horton recorded 13 saves in the win. Lauren Anglim recorded two goals, while Maggie Cifarelli added one for the Saints.
The Saints head back out on the road on Saturday, Mar. 4 as they take on St. Bonaventure. First draw is set for 11 a.m.
