Katie Nelson of Auburn dominates both on the golf course and in the classroom.
Nelson, who graduated from Holy Name High School in 2011, recently finished her freshman year at Siena College. She won a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference golf championship, made an NCAA tournament appearance and was given an All-American Scholar award.
The Auburn resident was among 585 female golfers across all three divisions of the NCAA recognized by the National Golf Coaches Association as 2011-12 All-American Scholars. To be selected, the athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 and play in half of the team's rounds in the season. Siena tied with Fairfield University for the most selections in the conference.
"I wasn't expecting to be selected, but I'm really excited and honored to make it," said Nelson, who finished her first season at Siena with a 3.77 GPA in business.
