Siena stumbled at the start of its first-ever NCAA Regional, and is 23rd of 24 teams after Thursday's first round at the Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio. Sophomore Kylie Strijek shot a solid 76 on day one, and is tied for 29th in the 126-player field.
"This is a good learning experience for a young team," said Siena head coach Dave Wronowski. "We will learn from some of today's mistakes, and I'm confident we'll move up the leaderboard tomorrow."
Strijek's four-over-par score puts her six shots behind individual leader Marina Alex of Vanderbilt. Individual MAAC champion Victoria Nguyen was next best for the Green and Gold, signing for a first-round 79 and tying for 56th in the process.
As a team, the Saints shot 328 Thursday, putting them 30 shots behind team leader USC. The top eight teams and two low individuals from the other participating teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, which begin May 22 in Franklin, Tenn.
Second round play at the Central Regional tees off on Friday morning.
