Saints Secure Fifth Place, As Maryland Wins Spider Spring Invitational

Bradenton, Fla. - The University of Maryland women's golf team fired a tournament-low 308 in today's second round to win the 2005 Spider Spring Invitational, played at The Legacy Golf Club at Lakewood Ranch on Monday and Tuesday. The Terrapins, who carded a tournament-best 22 birdies, shot a 627 (319-308) at the event. Krista Swanson, a sophomore from runner-up Montana, captured the individual medal with a 152 (77-75) at the par-72 course. She finished one stroke better than first-round leader Katie Stepanek (72-81) and Kelly Calkin (81-72), both from Maryland. Stepanek, who led the field with seven birdies, and Calkin both carded the lowest round of the tournament with an even-par 72. Following Maryland and Montana (324-313--637) was Richmond (325-323--648) in third, McNeese State (327-327--654) in fourth, Siena (353-327--680) in fifth and The Citadel (361-337--698) in sixth. Saints freshman Bridget Erwin moved up nine spots after day one to claim the top spot in a three-way tie for 17thplace. Erwin shot a-team low 167 (90-77). Megan Angis finished one stroke behind team leader Erwin for 20th place 168 (87-81). Jillian Blanchard dropped seven spots to finish in 22nd place 169 (84-85). Laura Woolgar garnered the 27th spot by finishing with a 176 (92-84). Rachel Scalzo rounded out the Saints five-member team rotation finishing 32nd 185 (96-89). Siena is set to compete in the Hartford Invitational April 12-12, 2005.
