Latham’s Ryan Egan of the men’s cross country team and field hockey’s Olivia Whelly are the recipients of September’s Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month award. These two Saints have defined the term ‘student athlete.’

Egan, who studies actuarial science, has been the top finisher for Siena in all four races including setting the fastest time by a Saint at Van Cortlandt Park in over a decade.

“I think running and a high level of academics go hand-in-hand,” cross country coach Joanne Dow said. “Student athletes have to be intrinsically motivated, they have to disciplined…Ryan is a great role model, that’s the kind of kid he is.”

The junior maintains a 3.69 GPA.

Whelly, a marketing major from Red Hook N.Y., currently leads the Saints in goals and ranks second in points. The senior holds a cumulative GPA of 3.74 and was inducted into the International Honor Society for AACSB Accredited Schools in 2011, as well as being named to the Division I National Academic Squad.

“We put a big focus on both sides of the game, they are student athletes,” head coach Kara Zappone said. “It sets a good example for everybody else going forward and making sure we are working hard in the classroom and on the field.”

The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
