The Siena Field Hockey game on Sunday will have more meaning than just a collegiate competition; the Saints will be raising money for a good cause. The team is accepting donations and setting up a donor site to raise money for the "Stick it 2 Cancer" organization, which raises money for the National Foundation of Cancer Research.
"There's so many people affected by it," coach Kara Zappone said. "Both within our team, within the Siena community and we wanted to bring attention to it and put together a small part."
The team will have a donation box at the Sunday noon game against Robert Morris and are asking fans to help donate to the cause. Fans that are unable to attend the game but still wish to contribute can do so online at http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/siena-college/stick-it-to-cancer. Siena will also use this site to continue to receive donation throughout the month.
The current goal is to raise $1,000, to help fund this cause. "In such a last minute effort to get people aware and to get people to the game and raise whatever we can," Zappone said. "Overall we would love to raise $2,500 to be able to donate and put our small part into the puzzle."
About Stick it 2 Cancer
The organization was built around a husband and wife team whose goal was to help fight cancer. Today, the organization puts together several events including Light the Night walk and pairs with other schools to help raise money for the Stick it to Cancer event.
For the game, this is the ninth all-time meeting between the two schools and Siena is 4-4 in those contests with the last win coming in 2009. The last three meetings have all been decided by one goal, with the Colonial edging the Saints 3-2 last season. In that game Jessica Smith and Kelly Johansmeyer tallied goals, the assists came from Smith and Cory dela Gorgendiere.
