LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Field hockey's efforts weren't enough on the field Friday, as the Saints fell to Sacred Heart 3-0. However, their efforts off the field were a resounding success, as the squad raised over five hundred dollars for breast cancer awareness.
In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, senior captains Lisa Heimerle and Brittany Moran spearheaded the fundraiser. Siena Turf Field was a sea of pink Friday, as the Saints (2-15, 0-6 NEC) warmed up in pink t-shirts and the stands were decorated with balloons of the same color.
Sacred Heart (4-12, 3-4 NEC) did their best to spoil the party, outshooting the Saints 15-2. Chelsea Carlson led the way offensively for the Pioneers, scoring a goal off a corner to end the first half and tallying two assists.
In net for Siena, Beth Meyers stopped two shots on goal in the first half, while Alison Baillargeon held down the fort in the second stanza with three saves of her own. On offense, Mackenzie Smith and Michaela Sullivan each recorded shots on goal.
Siena will take the field for the final time in 2010 on Halloween afternoon, when they travel to Quinnipiac for a 1 p.m. tilt.
