Carli Cataldo deflected a Kristen Nilsen shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner for what turned out to be the game-winning goal for Bucknell (6-9) at frigid Siena Field Tuesday afternoon. The Bison topped the Saints (5-9) 2-0 in the non-conference meeting.
Catuldo's tally followed a well orchestrated penalty corner in which five Bucknell players touched the ball before it found the back of the cage. The ball was placed then centered to Nilsen who rifled a shot that ricocheted past Siena's Kristen Heyde (Somer's, N.Y.). Heyde played well in the cage for the Saints, recording seven saves on several serious scoring chances.
The Siena offense never seemed to get on track. Juniors Lacee Iselo (Rome, N.Y.) and Erin Mead (Chestertown, N.Y.) combined for six of the team's seven shots and each had two shots on goal. Liz Jordan and Sonja Wettergreen were up to the challenge in the cage for the Bison stopping each of the opportunities. Mead had her consecutive games with a goal streak end at six.
Amy Marvel scored the only other goal off a penalty stroke just one minute after Catuldo's tally. Marvel beat Heyde stick-side with her uncontested shot following a flurry of action in front of the goal that resulted in the controversial infraction.
Bucknell out-shot the Saints 11-7 and held an 11-9 advantage in penalty corners.
The Saints return to action in their most crucial game of the season to date tomorrow afternoon against NEC foe Sacred Heart at Siena Field. Game-time of the rescheduled affair is set for 3:30 p.m.
