LOUDONVILLE, NY— Siena Field Hockey took the final three shots to the end of the second half but fell short in New Haven, Connecticut against MAAC foe Sacred Heart. Pioneers take the 3-1 win in the saints MAAC conference opener. Senior midfielder Molly Hagen scored the lone goal for Siena.
Saints (0-11) and pioneers (5-7) kept the game scoreless until the 29th minute, when Makenna Crawford scored off of a rebound. Sacred Heart would hold onto the 1-0 lead to enter the half.
At 39:31 Nichole Tolli would score off of a penalty stroke and extend the lead 2-0 quickly to start the second half.
However, just 32 seconds later Siena would respond. Sophomore forward Brianna Muniz would attempt a shot followed by Hagen, both of which would be saved by Sacred Heart goalie Hailey Power. Hagen would then grab the rebound and put it past the keeper to put the saints on the board and cut the pioneers lead to 2-1.
50 minutes in, Marlena Koellner would put the game away by scoring off of a penalty corner. Siena would attempt three more shots as well as a penalty corner within the last 45 seconds of the game, but would come up short against Sacred Heart as they fall in their MAAC opener.
Siena will travel a short 9 miles from Yale to Hamden, Connecticut as they take on Quinnipiac Sunday at 1 p.m.
