Julie Messenger scored an unassisted goal with just under 19 minutes remaining to break a 1-1 tie and give Sacred Heart (6-4) a one goal victory over Siena (2-5/2-4 NEC) in Connecticut on Sunday afternoon. Junior Ashley Smaldon scored the only goal for the Saints, which lost their third straight game.
Sacred Heart started the scoring 22 minutes into the game as Courtney Alger found the back of the cage on a Michelle Bruckner cross. Smaldon scored an unassisted goal just one minute later to tie the score.
The Pioneers peppered Siena goalie Kristen Heyde with 16 shots, but Heyde was stingy allowing just the two goals while making 11 saves.
Siena held a decisive 17-8 advantage in corner opportunities, a usual sign of dominance in play, but scored just the one goal.
The Saints return to action on Tuesday at cross-town rival Albany.
