Nanci Records took a feed from teammate Amy Brown and beat Siena goalie Kristen Heyde just over two and a half minutes into the game to account for the only tally in Rhode Island's 1-0 non-conference victory over Siena in Loudonville Sunday. Heyde continued her stingy play in goal, allowing the single blemish while making seven saves.
Rhode Island controlled most of play from the start, and held a significant statistical advantage, out-shooting Siena 14-2 and holding an 8-2 edge in penalty corners. The Rams improved to 1-3 on the season, Siena fell to 0-3.
The Saints best scoring opportunity came late in the second half, as Traci Baldwin broke free off a clearing pass from the Saints midfield. Rhode Island's M.J. Britt left the cage and slid into Baldwin to break up the opportunity. A few moments later Siena registered its first shot of the game, as Craly Demartis fired a shot into Britt's pads from just inside the circle.
Heyde made several key stops to keep the score 1-0, turning away three consecutive offerings at one point in the decisive stanza. The senior captain has made an astounding 34 saves over the Saints first three games.
Siena returns to action on Wednesday afternoon as they host Colgate at 4 p.m.
