Sept. 7, 2002
Junior Erin Mead (Chestertown, N.Y./North Warren) found the back of the cage on the Saints' (1-0/1-0 NEC) final shootout opportunity to secure an upset Northeast Conference win over Monmouth (1-1/0-1 NEC) at Siena Field. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie through double-overtime forcing the shootout.
After a scoreless first half, junior Amanda Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem) finished a flurry of activity in front of the Monmouth goal to account for Siena's first tally of the season. Classmates Lacee Iselo and Ashley Smaldon each fired shots at Hawks' goalie Carrie Colbert before Fronhoefer's successful rebound.
Monmouth answered Siena's goal just over five minutes later when Kristen Holmes scored off a Kelly Balady cross. The two teams each had opportunities in the games final moments and overtime sessions.
Following the 100 even minutes, the teams proceeded to the shootout session. Terri Cordes, Michelle Dorscheid and Lacee Iselo each scored on their strokes for the Saints and Gina Chico and Hulmes scored for the Hawks. With Siena shooting first, the pressure shifted to Mead in the fifth and decisive round of the shootout, and she delivered with the winning shot.
Both goalies performed extremely well all afternoon. Kristen Heyde (Somers, N.Y./Somers) had six saves and two stops in the shootout to earn the win for the Saints. Carrie Colbert had 12 saves, including a penalty shot late in regulation, but suffered the hard-luck loss.
For statistical purposes, no shootout scoring is credited and Siena is rewarded a 2-1 victory.
Siena returns to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. at home against Rider University.
