Forward Christina Zorzi broke a 1-1 tie 12 minutes into the second half and the Holy Cross Crusaders (1-0) added an insurance goal late in the period to pull away for a 3-1 non-conference field hockey triumph over Siena (0-2) in a non-conference match played in Worcester Tuesday night. Sophomore Kathleen Brennan scored the only Saints' goal on one of just two Siena shots on goal.
Holy Cross controlled most of play in the first half, but was unable to slip one past Siena goalkeeper Kristen Heyde until the 2:34 mark. Heyde would finish with 10 saves. Freshman Tara Welch broke the ice with her first collegiate goal, assisted by sophomore Jenna Cook.
The Saints pulled even at the 25:28 mark in the second half, when Brennan blasted a shot past senior goalkeeper Jennifer Corsilli. However, less than three minutes later, junior forward Zorzi tallied what turned out to be the game-winner. The goal was Zorzi's first of the season and third of her career. Senior co-captain Jillian LeClair scored the Crusaders' third and final goal of the night with 7:45 remaining.
Junior Erin Mead had the lone other shot on goal for the Saints who fell to 0-2 on the young season. Senior standout Lacee Iselo left the game with a wrist injury in the first half. Iselo, who is on pace to become the school's all-time leading scorer, was awaiting x-ray reports late Tuesday night.
The Saints return to action in the University of Maine Tournament this weekend. Siena begins play against Fairfield in the two-day event on Saturday at noon.
