Siena's Field Hockey team dropped its season opener 3-2 at Holy Cross Sunday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. Senior forward Michaela Sullivan and junior Callie Weise led the way for the Saints with a goal each.
"Overall it was a good day, a lot of momentum changes throughout the game," siena head coach Kara Zappone said. "We played really hard, pushed hard and continue to improve as we look forward to our game next week."
The Saints came out of the gates strong, scoring in the first four minutes of the game when forward Michaela Sullivan tallied her first goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Sage Stebbins, putting the Saints up 1-0. Then the storms came in forcing a two-hour lightning delay.
Holy Cross jumped out of the gates strong after the weather delay, scoring three goals on the Saints in a span of seven minutes, with goals from Haley Makuch, Molly Feit and Lauren Sutherland. Siena trailed 3-1 with under 15 minutes to go in the first half.
The Saints fought hard though, and junior Callie Weise, celebrated her birthday in good fashion scoring her first goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Megan Meyers to make it 3-2 at the end of the first half.
In the second half, each team tightened up their defense and the game concluded with Holy Cross holding on for the 3-2 win.
The Saints look to get in the win column next week when they travel to play Villanova on Saturday, September 7 at 1:00 p.m.
