Hamilton, N.Y.--The Siena College field hockey team (0-1) opened Siena's athletic season Wednesday evening with a disheartening 6-0 non-conference loss to Colgate University (1-0) at Tyler's Field. The Saints were out-shot 31-3 on the game, letting a superb effort by freshman cageminder Kristen Heyde (Somers, N.Y./Somers) go to waste.

Colgate's Kristine Thomas got the Red Raiders on the board just four minutes into the game with her first of two unassisted goals. Thomas found the back of the cage six minutes later to put Colgate in front 2-0. The Red Raiders took an insurmountable 4-0 lead into the intermission, scoring twice in under a minute late in the period. Meredith Metcalf accounted for the first tally on a set play off a penalty corner. Lauren DiCioccio notched the final score of the half unassisted with just over eight and a half minutes remaining. Siena's Lacee Iselo (Rome, N.Y./Holland Patten), the reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year, was responsible for each of the Saints two shots before the break.

Colgate again controlled the tempo and the scoreboard in the final stanza. DiCioccio recorded her second goal of the night with just over 10 minutes remaining, and Devon Graham, who assisted on Metcalf's goal earlier in the game, scored two minutes later, creating the final margin, 6-0.

The score in no way reflected the successful debut of Heyde, who stopped 16 would-be goals, including several one-on-one breakaways. The Saints return to action Saturday at Bucknell.
