A four-year member of the field hockey team at the University of Iowa in the mid-2000's, Zappone most recently spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Fairfield University. At Fairfield, Zappone helped oversee the daily operations of the team, including but not limited to recruiting, performance review, travel planning, and video exchanges. In her time at Fairfield, the Stags went from a program that went just 3-17 in 2007 to one that won nine games in both 2010 and 2011. The squad's 9-8 record this past year gave the program its first winning season since the 2000 campaign. As a player, Zappone was a former captain at the University of Iowa. Her teams won 46 games in four years and participated in two NCAA Tournaments after winning the Big Ten regular season title in 2004 and the Big Ten Tournament in 2006. Individually, she won the Big Ten's Sportsmanship Award as a senior in 2007, and also was named Iowa's Practice Player of the Year in 2005. Zappone earned her Bachelor's degree in Health and Sports Studies, with a concentration in Exercise Science, in May of 2007. She has since been studying for her Master's degree in Elementary Education at Fairfield, and is expected to graduate in July. |
