GREENSBORO, N.C. - 37 years ago Siena Women's Basketball took to the court for the very first time as a varsity program. Friday afternoon, the Saints play in their 1,000th all-time game - and 800th at the Division I level - when they face North Carolina A&T for a 2 p.m. tip-off here at the Corbett Sports Center.
Despite the program's long and storied history, the Saints (1-2) are in some unchartered territory today. It's the program's first trip to North Carolina in 17 years and just their second game ever against a team from the Tar Heel State. Additionally, it's just the program's second all-time matchup vs. a MEAC school.
But Siena hopes it has history on its side.
Greensboro has been the site of one of the greatest moments in the school's athletic history. In 1989 the men's basketball program upset Stanford in the NCAA Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Just a few short miles down the road, the Siena women hope their milestone 1,000th game will also be memorable.
But it won't be easy against a North Carolina A&T (3-2) squad which enters the fray on a three-game winning streak. The Aggies upset ACC foe Clemson Monday night and boast a potent offense which averages 77.8 points per game.
Siena's offense hasn't been too shabby either, topping 70 points in each of the past two games, perhaps setting up a barn burner here today.
