The Siena College women's basketball team was chosen to finish second while the men's team was picked fourth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league announced today. Additionally, Liene Jansone represented the women as a First Team Preseason selection while Tommy Mitchell and Michael Haddix were honored on the men's side, earning Third Team and Second Team distinction, respectively.
The Siena women's basketball team finished the 2002-03 season 25-8 overall and 15-3 in the MAAC, earning a share of the regular season league championship. Jansone enters the 2003-04 season as the defending MAAC Player of the Year. She finished last season ranked in the top five in the conference in points (17.2) and rebounds (8.9) while leading the league in field goal percentage (.603).
The men's team returns four starters from last year's 21-11 team that advanced to the second round of the NIT, including junior guard Mitchell and sophomore forward Haddix. Mitchell had the second most improved scoring average in the MAAC last season while Haddix was honored as an All-Rookie selection.
The men's team kicks off the 2003-04 season with an exhibition game against the Globtrotters on Tuesday, November 4, while the women host their first exibition game that Friday, November 7 against Team Concept. The two teams will open up their regular season on November 21 against Albany.
