NEW YORK, N.Y. - The two-time defending Siena men's basketball team has been picked to repeat as conference champions as announced Tuesday afternoon at MAAC Media Day here at the ESPN Zone. Meanwhile, the women's team was tabbed eighth in the Preseason Poll.

The men, which finished with a 27-8 overall record a year ago and made a second straight appearance into the NCAA Tournament's Second Round, garnered nine of ten first place votes and picked up 99 of a possible 100 points. Niagara meanwhile was selected second with 87 points and Rider, which earned the other first place vote, tabbed third.

The women's team enters its benchmark 20th season under head coach Gina Castelli looking to improve upon last year's sixth place finish in the MAAC. Four-time defending MAAC Champion Marist was a unanimous selection to repeat, with Iona chosen second and Canisius third. The women earned 39 points in the poll.

Seniors Ronald Moore and Edwin Ubiles each earned Preseason All-MAAC First Team accolades on the men's side, while junior Ryan Rossiter and senior Alex Franklin claimed Second Team honors. Rider senior Ryan Thompson was named Preseason Player of the Year.

On the women's side, senior guard Allie Lindemann was recognized as a Preseason All-MAAC Third Team representative. Two-time MAAC Player of the Year Rachele Fitz of Marist was the favorite to repeat that honor.

The Siena men begin their quest for a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance on Nov. 13 at Tennessee State while the women open their 2009-10 season Nov. 15 at Illinois.
